Beyond the Showroom: What a Day with Food from the Heart Taught Us About Life

GW Automotive Group team members standing together at Food from the Heart warehouse, holding charity signs and prepared food packages for distribution to the elderly.

In the automotive industry, our days are defined by movement. We talk about horsepower, smooth transitions, and clear communication. We spend our hours helping customers find the right vehicle to navigate their lives. But earlier this year, our entire team took a step back from the fast-paced world of car sales to slow down and show up for a different kind of journey.

We partnered with Food from the Heart for a day of door-to-door food distribution. We went in thinking we were there to provide a service; we left realizing how much we had to learn.

From Sales Talk to Human Connection

As car dealers, we pride ourselves on our communication skills. We understand people’s needs and help them find solutions. But as we walked through the corridors of rental blocks, our perspective shifted.

The “insights” we gained weren’t about market trends—they were about the quiet struggles of our neighbors. We witnessed the reality of elderly residents living in solitude, reminded of just how fragile life can be. We are used to seeing people at their most excited (buying a new car); here, we saw people at their most vulnerable.

A Doorway That Stayed With Us

One particular moment shook many of us to the core. We met an elderly auntie who was struggling just to reach her own doorstep. She was so frail that she couldn’t manage the simple task of turning the key in her lock. She had to hand the keys to us to help her open her own home.

Watching her struggle, knowing she was living all alone, brought a wave of sadness over the team. It’s hard not to wonder: How does she manage every other hour of the day? That moment ignited a sense of compassion in us that you simply cannot find behind a desk. It made us realize that while life can be bitter, there is always a way to deal with it—it just depends on how you choose to see it.

Reflection: Gratitude in the Grind

This experience was a wake-up call for all of us as individuals. In the hustle of hitting targets, it’s so easy to become ungrateful or focused on what we don’t have. We realized we should be more appreciative of the health and stability we often take for granted. To be truly contented is a choice we often neglect because we are too focused on our work.

The fact that our entire company participated in this event shows that even as a small organization, we can contribute meaningfully to society. We don’t just want to be a company that sells cars; we want to be a company that cares about the people on the road and the people in the homes we pass by every day.

How You Can Join the Cause

We hope our experience encourages others to look around and see where they can help. Even the smallest gesture—opening a door, sharing a meal, or simply noticing someone—can mean the world.

If you or your organization are keen to participate and make a difference, we highly recommend reaching out to the team at Food from the Heart.
